Thespians Give Back!
Last year, Texas Thespians worked toward bettering our world both locally and nationally during state festival held in Grapevine. The State Thespian Officers invited all members to participate in two different events during the three-day festival so that students could not only be part of the festival, but once again demonstrate how students care and share.
Our State Thespian Officers lead by example and are the driving force behind student giving at the state level!
The “Two Can” Dance was held on Thursday Night. Festival attendees brought in monetary donations and canned goods as entrance fees so that they could enjoy the fun with over 6,000 Thespians, all while benefiting the Resource Center of Dallas.
The Resource Center of Dallas is a non-profit organization that focuses on health, cultural competency training, HIV & STD testing services, mental health services, and more. Our students donated over $600 and a truckload of food.
“A Minute to Give it” is our monetary challenge to ensure that students involved in theatre are able to attend festival. With this challenge, our organization provides grants to help troupes reach their goal of attending Texas State Festival. Last year, Texas Thespians brought two new troupes to State with this initiative and the generosity of people around the state and country helped fund over $50,000 of scholarships to students who were financially burdened and affected by the hurricanes that devastated our areas.
The Send a Troupe to Texas Thespian State Festival grant covers up to $3000 for basic registration expenses for Texas Troupes which have never been to the Texas State Festival and who can demonstrate financial barriers to attending.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. By drawing upon the talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $285 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.
The International Thespian Society has raised more than $1 million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Texas Thespians supports this initiative with a Silent Auction each year at Festival. Auction items include signed posters and programs from current Broadway productions.
Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat is the International Thespian Society’s annual nationwide community service initiative. Many thanks to all who participated in this year’s Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat campaign.
Together, 269 troupes collected and distributed over 325,000 pounds of food for their neighbors in need. We are pleased to announce this year’s award winners. Active troupes whose TOTS-EAT registration and donation verification forms were received by the deadline were considered for awards. For more information, go to the TOTS-EAT Community Service Awards Program.
