Picture
The morning after the sacking of Troy, the surviving women--their husbands, sons, and fathers killed--await their fate at the hands of the victorious Greeks. Euripides' classic play presents Hecuba, the proud Queen of Troy as she steels herself and her subjects for slavery and death, seeking desperately for any opportunity to defy their captors. The devastating scene that follows, as the Greeks dole out even more death and divide the women among themselves, has served as one of the Western world's most powerful indictments of war of 2500 years.
