Texas Thespian Theatrical Design State Meet
Dramatic Design Challenge 2023
The Dramatic Design challenge will showcase the work of four student designers. Designs will be from Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl. Each team must present a unified design concept and designs for Scenic, Costumes, Publicity, and Properties. The top scores will be announced as Best Overall Cohesive Design
General Guidelines:
The design teams may choose to do their renderings digitally or use other forms of media (i.e. watercolor on watercolor paper, pastel or chalk on artist paper, etc.), but they must follow the following guidelines:

- Each design team will develop a unified design concept from Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl. https://www.sarahruhlplaywright.com/plays/view/EURYDICE/
- A design team needs to consist of four (4) students: a scenic designer, a costume designer, a publicity designer, and a properties designer.
- Scenic Designer: One student in charge of the design and presentation of a thumbnail sketch or scenic perspective drawing that must include an Elevator to the Underworld
- Costume Designer: One student in charge of designing and presenting one costume plate with The STONES - Big, Little, Loud - swatches are not required.
- Publicity Designer: One student in charge of designing and presenting a poster advertising their production.

- Properties Designer: One in charge of the design and presentation of The Nasty Mans Scooter/Tricycle
- A complete design package of ALL design elements (Scenic, Costume, Publicity, Property) must be presented in order to be adjudicated.
- The entire team will collaborate to create a complete cohesive design concept statement that unifies all four design elements.
- Each team will submit a digital slide show converted to a PDF, presenting a pictorial reference of their work.
- The team will be adjudicated as a whole, with each design and presentation receiving a certain score and their overall collaboration toward a unified design concept will receive a score.

- The Scene Design Rendering or thumbnail sketch can be either a full-color perspective drawing from the front of the stage or a thumbnail sketch. Design must include The Elevalator to the Underworld.
- The Costume Design Rendering must be a costume plate of the three Stones: Big, Loud, Small
- The Poster Design Rendering must be 11”x17” and have all information legally required by the publishing company.
- The Property Design Rendering should be of The Nasty Man’s Scooter/Tricycle.
Slide 1 – Titled “Team Design Challenge”
- Include the play title and author
- Team Member Names/School Name/Area of Design
- Communicate the team’s vision and consider the design’s overall meaning, purpose, direction, and depth.
- Include the Designer’s Name, chosen scene, and at least 4 images used for design inspiration.
- Final Scenic Design Rendering or Thumbnail Sketch.
- Include the Designer’s Name, chosen characters, and at least 4 images used for design inspiration.
- Photo of final Costume Design Plate.
- Include the Designer’s Name and at least 4 images used for design inspiration.
- Final Poster Design.
- Include the Designer’s Name, chosen prop, and at least 4 images used for design inspiration.
- Final Property Design Rendering
- 4 photos of the final product of each of the designs
